Career Opportunities in Mental Health

Mental Health has gained much-needed attention and recognition after the COVID-19 pandemic. Being confined within four walls, having minimal social interaction, and living in the digital world took a great toll on everyone’s mental health due to disruption in our normal way of life. With an increasing number of mental illness cases across the country and reducing stigma, career opportunities in mental health have a broader scope.

In this article, we delve into the various ways one can build a career in mental health, as well as the necessary educational qualifications, and skills required to do so.

Counselling Psychologist

Counselling psychologists typically work with people who have milder psychological problems. Their work focuses on difficulties that emerge in the context of school, work, or family problems as well as emotional, social, and physical concerns that result from daily stressors. Counselling psychologists may address problems with relationships, substance misuse, employment, difficulty adjusting to life changes, and other topics. They work in organisations, hospitals, mental health facilities, schools, and private practices.

To work as a counselling psychologist in India, you must have a master’s degree in counselling psychology.

Clinical Psychologist

Clinical psychologists are mental health professionals who are trained to assess, diagnose, and treat mental, emotional, and behavioural disorders and problems. They use a variety of therapeutic approaches, such as cognitive-behavioural therapy, psychoanalytic therapy, and interpersonal therapy, to help individuals overcome their difficulties and improve their mental health and overall well-being.

To work as a clinical psychologist in India, it is mandatory to obtain a licence from the Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI). You will have to complete an M.Phil in Clinical Psychology from an RCI-recognised institute, and pass the licensure exam along with any other requirements.

Psychiatrists are medical professionals who are qualified to administer pharmaceuticals as well as provide psychotherapy, although their major focus is often on medical and pharmacological treatments. They have received specialised training in the assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of mental diseases.

To become a psychiatrist, you must complete a four-year residency at a hospital’s psychiatric wards after receiving a bachelor’s degree (MBBS) where you interact with a wide spectrum of clients, from children to adults, who may have behavioural, emotional, or mental disorders.

Child Psychologist

Child psychologists are trained to work with children and adolescents who are experiencing a wide range of emotional, behavioural, and developmental disorders. Some of the disorders they have to deal with include Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), Autism spectrum disorder (ASD), and Anxiety disorders. They may also work with children who are experiencing problems related to family dynamics, school adjustment, and peer relationships.

Industrial/Organisational Psychologist

Industrial-organisational (I/O) psychologists are experts in the study of human behaviour in the workplace. They apply principles and theories of psychology to help organisations improve their productivity, performance, and employee well-being. The duties performed by I/O psychologists are as follows:

  • Researching to understand employee behaviour and attitudes, work motivation, leadership, and other topics related to organisational effectiveness, developing and implementing selection and training programs to help organisations identify and develop top talent
  • Assessing and improving organisational culture and communication
  • Conducting job analysis to identify necessary job skills and duties.

Substance Abuse Counsellor

They are mental health counsellors who work with people who are battling an addiction to alcohol, drugs, and other substances. Their goal is to help these individuals overcome their substance abuse problems and achieve lasting recovery. They provide individual and group counselling to help individuals develop coping skills, identify triggers for substance abuse, and develop strategies for avoiding relapse. Additionally, they impart education and support to the patient’s families about substance abuse and addiction. Substance Abuse Counsellors are also involved in developing and implementing treatment plans and setting goals for therapy.

Sports Psychologist

Sports psychologists are licensed mental health professionals who serve as coaches, advisors, or therapists for athletes in all sports disciplines. They help athletes reach their goals, overcome injuries, manage anxiety, and increase performance in sports. A Master’s or Doctoral Degree in clinical, counselling, or sports psychology is necessary to work as a sports psychologist.

Marriage and Family Therapist

Marriage and family therapists are mental health professionals who work with couples, families, and groups to help them understand and resolve relationship problems. They address multiple problems such as infidelity, lack of communication, parenting, and domestic violence.

Marriage and family therapists may work with individuals at any stage of a relationship, including premarital couples, newlyweds, and long-term partners. They may also work with families to help them navigate changes or challenges such as divorce, the loss of a loved one, or the addition of a new family member.
